Next New

Suggest a new type of "new media" that doesn't currently exist.

A type of new media would be technology that detects arterial and other diseases early; this would benefit people worldwide. This type of new media can help prevent heart attacks, strokes and other diseases that saves lives in the future. It can be a virtual reality, three dimension media that can be used in place of hospital machines.

This pioneering, innovative technology can be the beginning of a better future in the health of people around the world. This technology can do this by aiding in detecting possible heart abnormalities, strokes, and other debilitating diseases that plague us today.

The virtual three dimension technology can detect any of the diseases mentioned by spotting anything abnormal or unusual within the body. This can be a futuristic way to promote a healthier lifestyle through better eating, more proactive health checkups, and exercise.

Describe it.

With the massive amount of prescriptions and advertisements claiming medications are the solution to what ails you in the United States, new solutions for health care needs to be taken into account. A new media device could be a virtual reality, three dimension type that can scan over the whole body; it can be done by producing a realistic picture of a person's insides to spot any differences in any of the arteries or veins. For example, the device can scan the respiratory and nervous systems to show possible abnormal formulations that either started or is starting to form inside the body.

When a person goes to the doctor for a checkup, they can get checked for triglyceride and cholesterol levels through a blood test. When the exam detects high cholesterol and triglyceride levels, the person usually gets a prescription to control these levels. Instead, new media can show the person exactly what is going on inside their body with annual, regular health checkups. The technology can detect any abnormalities spotted and take immediate action to correct any the problem early. This can avoid any possible last ditch efforts to just control the situation through lifetime medications but cure it.

This can cut down on the medicines people are taking to control their health problems. People can possibly have this problem detected early and resolved through early detection and healthy living. Other technologies of this type can offer natural types of solutions to help resolve any health problems that may plague us without the present bombardment of pharmaceuticals.

Another new type of "new media" that (possibly) doesn't currently exist.

A full service ATM (Automatic Teller Machine) with multiple banks listed for customers to access at any location versus going to the bank itself to do banking. For example, if a customer has an account at Bank of America, they would have to go a bank branch of that bank to do their banking without the extra or added fees for accessing the ATM.

Instead of going to their bank, they can go to a nearby ATM with a connection to their bank and do what they need at this location. The ATM can have a list of banks connected with that ATM, and the customer can first look for their bank. If the bank is not listed, then the customer can decide if they want to use it.

With an ATM that can offer at least some of the major services for customers, they would not have to go to the bank making it easier for them to access their account at the ATM with a connection to their bank. Making it easier and more convenient to do business at any ATM location. This would cut down on fees from the current ATM machines and the bank for accessing your account from that ATM.

Wiki so Far

What have you been doing to contribute to our class wiki?

I have been working on how users can enhance their professional profile using LinkedIn, and the features that help them stand out when applying for positions online. The addition explains how users can continuously use the site to build their profiles as they move in life and establish accomplishments made along the way. I'm currently looking for other contributions that can enhance the career management, career building and career starting profiles. I edited sections of the wiki.

I have a couple of wikis to add regarding security and career management. The security wiki explains how employees from top management to the middle and clerical levels of company employment make mistakes when it comes to social networking. It goes on to explain how resolve or avoid these mistakes with solutions. I am also looking for other contributions that can enhance the security area for future reference.

P2P

1. What is file sharing?

According to King's article, "Take Advantage of P2P-Not Fear It," file sharing is the sharing and transmitting of computer data through the internet or through networks at various levels of access. Users can transmit data from one computer to another efficiently, and this allows users to work on documents from any location.

2 . What is P2P file sharing?

According to King's article, "Take Advantage of P2P-Not Fear It,"P2P file sharing is peer to peer file sharing that allows users to use software programs to search and locate other computers that have media files to access and download. P2P allows users to share files through software programs and networks online.

3. What are some examples of P2P file sharing?

Examples of P2P file sharing in King's article is Gnutella which is a well-known network; it allows users to send out file requests. It connects to the network that contains the file using software and download the file on their own computer. Another example is Steal This Film that distributes books, movies, documentaries, and music.

The article explains how this form of sharing can bring in audiences that can bring in revenues through donations and not focus totally on revenue. This can possibly avoid piracy which costs many companies in many industries millions and possibly billions of dollars in loss revenue annually.

According to Stelter and Stone's article, " Digital Pirates Winning Battle With Studios," the movie industry tried and worked very hard to prevent the illegal downloading of their movies such as "The Dark Knight" when it was released; the result after many months of planning was unsuccessful.

They worked long and hard to stop this by looking for alternatives to this growing problem. The biggest problem is that it is very easy to download from many places on the internet movies, music, and television shows; also, it is very hard to track down the places that make these downloads available to users on the internet.

Privacy

In this post, discuss how the issues of privacy and confidentiality are related to new media.

In Reed's article, " Information Privacy: Changing Norms and Expectations, it discusses the boundaries that one can go to determine what is considered private and what is considered public. The Fourth Amendment gives all of us the freedom to be safe on person, belongs, home, and other personal belongings without have to fear being unlawfully searched and have any type of property seized. That is if you don't post anything on the internet; if you do, you stand the chance of being ridiculed and or implemented for posting something that appears offensive,  racist, or prejudice. Being careful - think before you post - is one of the most precious of life's lessons one can learn.

As in Taylor's article, "Attach Ad Marks New Era for Millennials Running for Office," it describes how a young candidate is running for an office left vacant by the previous person due to a new position. The young candidate's past came out when they were in college and posted photos and sayings that may come back to haunt them. This is an example of watch what you say, when you say it, where you say it, and how you say it. You never know what the future holds and incidences like this can hinder and possibly damage their aspirations for a great career no matter what the field one chooses.

In the past, without the new advanced technological ways social media evolved one would not have the quick, easy access to any forms of social interactions. Now anyone can go to social media such as Facebook, Instagram, MySpace, and YouTube to find whatever they need to either research or use for decisions such as employment or political office. They can be the biggest asset or biggest liability.

Advice

You are hired by Baruch College to use new media to improve the College.
What are some suggestions you would make using new media?

One suggestion is to have more hybrid classes to free up time students may have to study and take more time to do outside work on the subject they are studying. One advantage to hybrid classes is that students and Instructors can gain access to updated information and use that to prepare lessons, papers, and other research for the class.

In Agardy's article, "Open Source Textbook Program Expanding in Coming Months," it explains how using new media can enhance how students learn. Karen Lawson explains how new media can help teach students in a more up-to-date fashion versus the old media way of teaching with textbooks. She goes on to explain how it is difficult to teach from outdated textbooks where the knowledge is not sufficient for students today versus getting continuous, updated information online.

Also, an advantage to this form of learning is a wiki form of updating information. When a teacher posts subject information online other teachers from other locations can update the post by adding relevant information and or deleting non-relevant information or information that is obsolete.

Another advantage is that the class can help students by answering questions or inquiries that may arise when studying and preparing an assignment. This way the Instructor can give immediate feedback and the student can determine if the feedback given is accurate enough to answer their inquiries. If not, the student and Instructor can have immediate dialog to resolve the meaning of the inquiry.

Another suggestion is to have more online classes so that students can have the time to prepare and submit assignments online with the freedom of the internet to do so. This gives both students and Instructor the time to prepare and submit the assignments in a timely manner. Depending on the class or type of class precaution must be taken.

For example, in Taylor's article, "Attack Ad Marks New Era For Millennials Running For Office," one must be careful what they say and how they say it. Our class is one perfect example; students are being introduced to various types of new media and is learning about the ways in which one should conduct themselves while online. Being careful about the content of your posts is of the utmost importance. This can minimize any possible negative feedback and backlashes that can result in the future - possible lost opportunities as a result of those past posts that were considered fun or funny is now being displayed in another light.

Creativity

Discuss how new media fosters creativity.

This form of social networking gives users of all types many options when posting to others online. This new media allows users to download large amounts of multimedia files and store them onsite. Users have many choices with future developments such as taped or live videos. Users can use new media such as YouTube (which is said to be the largest video sharing Web 2.0 social media with over 100 million video accesses daily) to share various types of information-either as a learning tool or as entertainment.

In the article, "YouTube Traffic Characterization: A View from the Edge," authors Gill, Arlitt, Liand Mahanti researched local campus and global user and the many ways they use YouTube as a form of new media versus traditional (old) media. One example, was their findings about how videos are utilized. The research discuss many features such as patterns of use, reference behaviors, and the properties of files of users.

The findings state that very little requests were made for videos, but the most downloads are transfer bytes from videos. Some advantages of this form of new media is that the videos are rated and they are categorized compared to old media. If a user goes to YouTube and want to find videos about learning in any category, they will get a range of videos with ratings. These ratings can help a user determine if they would like to either view the video and determine if the video would be helpful. Also, when a user is looking for a video, there are other videos of that topic made available.

The user can then pick and choose from those videos to watch and determine which one or ones fit their needs. New media files can be downloaded instantly and watched immediately after downloading it; old media needs a FLV (flash video) file to downloaded before the video can be viewed.  The speed in which a user can watch a video with new media is much more improved than with old media which needs more time to upload the FLV file (file format) before a video can be downloaded and watched. New media presents a greater form of using the internet; with the advancement of technology daily, new media will continue to outpace old media. Old media is the traditional and new media is the advancement of old media.

Creativity and New Media

New media helps people from all walks of life; my new media project explains how anyone can learn how to crochet. My YouTube video shows you how to crochet the single stitch, one of the stitches used by crocheters to create many projects from hats, scarves, blankets (for babies and adults),  and other projects for all occasions.

My video is to show how anyone can create great items for people of all ages. My most rewarding thing about crochet is when I make things for charity. I crochet hats and baby blankets for charities for children and adults battling cancer. When I receive notifications that they gave one of my crocheted garments to someone and they were very happy and appreciative of the gift, that brings me great joy. I hope that my video is able to teach anyone watching it. My video is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCAkD2f3V8U

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

What are different ways these virtual worlds can be used?

One way to use virtual worlds is in hospitals, schools, entertainment, and other organizations. The article, "Avatar II: The Hospital," it describes how a hospital simulation is built and used by hospital staff for patients. Disaster simulations for the hospital are created to test the responses of the staff and their efficiency to the disasters created. This helps hospital staff stay alert for any future occurrences and prepare them for stress management in these situations.

In "After Second Life, Can Virtual Worlds get a reboot?"helps children express themselves and use their imagination when interact and communicate with others. This creates a comfort zone for them and help them interact with other people more easily than face-to-face interaction. This can help ease the shyness these children may have regarding face-to-face interactions. This article describes how virtuality can be a great asset to various businesses and help people that feel isolated feel connected to someone in the comfort of their own surroundings - be it at home, at a cafe, at school, or even at a mall.

In "No Budget, No Boundaries: It's the Real You," this virtual world allows people to be and themselves by acting out in their alter ego.  This virtual world allows people to create the person they would like to be but can't in the real world. They get to live out their inner true lifestyle  through the Avatar. For example, a woman who works as a Nurse in real life does not buy the things her Avatar bought and live the lifestyle of the Avatar because it is not practical. Reality keeps us grounded to what we truly need to focus on and what we need to do to live; the Avatar allows us to get away from all the harshness of reality and escape into the lifestyle we would love to live.

In iReport: 'Naughty Auties' Battle Autism with Virtual Interaction," this is an example of how people can help people with the same or similar condition. This article describes how a man living in London, England created a virtual world for people with autism. This virtual world helps them communicate and interact with others without feeling isolated, ashamed, or embarrassed about who they are with their condition. The communicate in the comfort and ease of their own surroundings.

What are the pros and cons? Be specific.

The pros are that people can converse with each other comfortably and conveniently through Avatars. We can live out out inhibitions and be comfortable living it out. Also, virtual worlds can help improve our sense of awareness and alertness through simulations set up by our peers or administrators.
The cons are that it can take people more into isolation and not prepare them for real world interaction with others as required. It can create very unrealistic situations that may cause complex, challenging resolutions for people. A balance of virtual world and reality is needed to help people with shyness and other conditions that limits their abilities to communicate and interact with other people.

How do virtual worlds foster creativity?

Virtual worlds create many different simulations designed to enhance and benefit the organization's specific needs. While doing this, the organization can enjoy the benefits of convenience and learning for staff and customers alike. A couple of benefits are raising awareness and alertness for staff, comfort of communicating with others freely, and convenience of their environment or setting while communicating or interacting with others. Companies can create many scenarios to help employees and customers feel good about the use of virtual worlds. For example, in the article, "In Room 100, It's Sid and Nancy All Over Again," Michael Brown  recreated Hotel Chelsea that was beloved by many in the real and now the virtual world. People now have the chance to revisit the hotel without feeling like they lost a favorite or landmark.

What do you think the future of virtual worlds will look like?

The future of virtual worlds can become endless with imaginative ideas that help others in a variety of ways. Recreating famous places and buildings, recreating simulated emergency situations for employees to stay alert and creating virtual worlds for people with disabilities is just a few ideas that the virtual world can continue to build upon. They can continue to build greater more futuristic creations in the future such as bridges, cities, and vacation spots for people to visit without having to pay the price. The future for virtual worlds is endless.

Twitter

How does a Twitter discussion compare to a BlackBoard Discussion? To an in-class discussion?

Twitter uses a limited character, to-the-point tweets that convey messages to other users. These messages can enlighten, inform, and interest other tweeters. Twitter studies the way people use social media, how they tweet, how they respond, and monitor how the content is posted by users on this social media; this is to maintain a certain level of integrity for all who tweet. While Blackboard is used in academia that allows students and faculty to converse with each other, Twitter allows users either in a group or individually to correspond to posts of various interests, and concerns.

Blackboard usually have discussions and conversions with their Professor regarding mainly the class subject and topics relating the class. Like Twitter, you may or may not get immediate or any response to your posts from others. When messages are sent, they may not be completely understood; the sender will have to wait for a response or responses to from receivers of the message find out that the message was not understood. Then the sender will have to react to the receivers of the message.

In-class discussions can give students immediate feedback in for form of answers to questions and concerns they have concerning either the course or of other concerns that may effect them in daily life. Topics of interest can be discussed at the time class is in session and can get direct feedback. With Twitter, you may or you may not get immediate feedback. Like Twitter the wording in messages may not convey the accuracy of the message the sender is trying to convey to others. In-class discussions and conversations can give you immediate feedback if the message is not completely understood and can be rephrased to help students understand the nature and purpose of the statement and or question being asked.

Twitter and Blackboard can give users the convenience of the internet to send and receive messages to converse with others at various times of the day, and in-class discussions can give immediate responses only during class time. If you have any questions or concerns after class, students will have to either wait until the next class or email the Professor for a possible earlier response.

Social Networking Sites

Social Networking Sites

Compare your impressions of 4 sites.

Facebook, Twitter, Wiki, Blogs

Facebook is a social network that connects people with each other and groups display and connect interested people. I was able to connect to people that I went to High School with and has since moved on with their lives. It is a great thing to be able to search for people and connect with them after years of not seeing each other. I was able to go to functions that they invited me to and enjoy. With that said, Facebook is now facing many dilemmas due to data security breaches; the safety of people's personal data is of the utmost importance. The fact that our personal data that may contain our interests and preferences is sold to unknown people or companies is very worrisome.

On the other hand, Twitter is a more diligent social network that monitors its users much closer than Facebook. They have a limit on the amount a user can post at one time; so the user must be precise when posting. Their studies show them what users do and their patterns of usage on the website. Twitter monitors it users for potentially dangerous content that can offend or hurt others. Twitter uses their abilities to keep hazardous and/or dangerous posts to a minimum on their website to protect all users and keep a high-standard and quality of social media.

Wiki's are a social media that allows users to state many messages with a lot more room to express their feelings, state their findings based on research, and post topics and information that may be of interest to others that use this media. One unique feature of wiki's are that users can work collaboratively on one project either for research, work, or school. The users can add text and other material, edit material, and delete material that may not be of use to the project. It gives users more flexibility when using this social media. It helps users bring together all people and material in a faster, more convenient way.

Blogs are a social media that allows users to post information that can either inform or interest other users on the website. Blogs connect users to their interests and research posted, and allows them to respond regarding these posts. Blogs serve to help people reach out and respond to the interests and topics that concern them the most.

Social Networking

Social Networking

What are some ways (corporate and otherwise) that these technologies can be used?

Video chatting and other mediums such as Facebook, Linkedin, and Instagram, companies can benefit from the instant access they can get through mass communication social networking brings. Many companies can reach many possible and loyal consumers through their unique brand of marketing their products.

Social networking can bring sales right to their door without the challenge of bringing consumers into their storefront establishments. Social media can have their products advertised and marketed over the internet within a matter of seconds, and consumers have access to these products in a matter of seconds after companies publish them online.

What are the benefits of these technologies to society? Be specific.

a. Convenience - the quickest way to advertise and publish products to a mass of consumers is through the internet. Social networking can help facilitate the way companies do business in a friendly, warm manner.  Consumers can build relationships with the businesses they buy products from online through fast, reliable service and a great product.

When the products businesses sell are consistently of high-standard quality, consumers will purchase from these businesses time after time and become possibly loyal to the business for which they established this relationship. In the age of technology and information, the convenience of quick, fast access to what consumers need and want is a great way to become a great communicator today and in the future.

b. Efficient - the most consistent way to deliver great service at a low cost to consumers is another way to create great relationships with the business and the product.  With constant interaction with consumers, businesses can get a feel of how the market with them are evolving and changing through time. By using social media, companies can use many different types of surveys to get current reactions to the current ways businesses are communicating with consumers and how to improve their connections to consumers in the future.

c. Effective - when businesses use strategies that help them create more effective ways to reach consumers and establish relationships with them that can build a community of productive results. Businesses that connect with these consumers can create an environment helps both consumers and businesses have better ways to establish a relationship that can last a long time.

Is there a "dark side"?

With all the great things that today's technology can bring, there are also challenging things that technology can bring. Accidents happen, and when businesses do not communicate in a manner that would help consumers feel confident that they are listening and truly care about what happens then many scenarios can play out. In "Amazon Says Error Removed Listings" by Motoko Rich, many gay and lesbian consumers were upset and concerned about the way the situation was handled. Amazon can learn from this and plan an appropriate way to respond to consumer concerns by using more efficient, effective methods that would be respectful to all.

In 'Dictionary word of the year: "Unfriend" by Doug Gross, he explains how face-to-face relationships can become dangerously lacking when there is too much electronic communication throughout the life of a young adult. He explains how children from very young ages are introduced to electronic devices, social media and how to use them in a very extensive manner causes less intimidate face-to-face time.

This can cause very awkward times when these same children need to meet people and establish relationships with others either at work or personal (such as finding a mate and have a family in the future) can be very challenging.  I think the best way to cure this is to establish a balanced approach to social networking. Have limited times for which they can communicate online and then go and have social time as well.

Blogs v. Wikis

* Compare and contrast blogs and wikis.

The difference between blogs and wikis is that blogs are not edited by others and wikis are be edited by others. When you allow others to contribute it can become a problem or challenge if you don't put a limit on who can contribute to the wiki. Blogs and wikis are both posts that people can read and get useful information.

Wikis can be a collaboration among people for major projects such as multi faceted reports. Also, wiki's are good for establishing intranet at a low cost and not worry about security and functional capabilities. For example, in "Information Week's How to Use Wiki's for Business" stated that wiki's are cheap, easy to use and extensive. This is a convenient way to connect with others in the organization when working on a big, major project collectively.

Employees from different departments at different locations can contribute to the wiki to produce a cohesive project that others can read either for research, information, or for decision making. The New York Times stated that it became a challenge to keep track of the wiki they created about the war in Iraq when they invited anyone to contribute to what the wiki called wikitorial. The challenge was the problem that arose when people with no good intentions posted mean things that did not represent the topic The New York Times was trying to discuss; the newspaper then took down the wiki.

On the flip side, in The New York Times's article, "An Internal Wiki that's not Classified" describes how they have a more updated convenient way of working-the wiki. For example, when Political Diplomats from different countries come for a meeting, in the past would manually create a memo with the backgrounds of the Diplomats coming to the meeting. Now a wiki called Diplopedia is created and attach links of the Diplomats before the meeting.

* Comment on the importance of convergence in today's networked world.

"In New Media Technologies: Overview and Research Framework," Linda and Hershey Friedman described in the research convergence as one of the greatest of trends for corporations to use in transmitting various types of data. These same companies are also competing for the markets of digital TV and videos. Another example is old media is turning in new media via the internet. Newspapers are now online, TV programs are also online, as well as journals such as Accountancy Journal. This created a more modern convenient, efficient way of sending and receiving information globally.

* How can blogs be used for collaboration?

"New Media Technologies: Overview and Research Framework," Blogs can be used to work on documents collectively among employees. An example is GoogleDocs; this allows employees to work on the same document and share updated information to create accurate, up-to-date reports. This can be a more convenient, efficient way to work on reports and documents that need more than one employee from different departments.

* Can you think of a new use for a wiki that has not been done yet?

Maybe a wiki that can track fresh produce in grocery stores? This can be used by large chain stores like Key Food, D'Agostino, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe's. They can have employees from the various stores take stock on the vegetables and fruits at their location. Create reports for their stores, and compare the results. They can take surveys from customers about their preferences and compile a collaborative report for making decisions about future amounts and types of purchases of produce. They can create a report on how to best buy, sell, and store fresh produce in a more efficient way for customers.

Denise's Proposal

Title: The Five Cs of Social Networking: Better or Worse then the Real Thing?

In the age of information and technology, my paper will describe how old and new media evolved and how the five Cs-community, collaborative, communication, creativity, and convergence have been integrated into the very fabric of modern everyday life.

First, I will describe Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 and explain the differences and similarities of both.

Then I will describe and analyze how they relate to everyday life, the impact it has on every level, and the pros and cons of each such as how individuals use a Web 1.0 versus a Web 2.0 today. Many may use both, many may use either Web 1.0 or Web 2.0. For example, many people watch television  shows on both television and their laptops while others watch only television and others may watch mainly on their laptops. I will show how this differs and how it is similar in today's modern world.
