Discuss how new media fosters creativity.
This form of social networking gives users of all types many options when posting to others online. This new media allows users to download large amounts of multimedia files and store them onsite. Users have many choices with future developments such as taped or live videos. Users can use new media such as YouTube (which is said to be the largest video sharing Web 2.0 social media with over 100 million video accesses daily) to share various types of information-either as a learning tool or as entertainment.
In the article, "YouTube Traffic Characterization: A View from the Edge," authors Gill, Arlitt, Liand Mahanti researched local campus and global user and the many ways they use YouTube as a form of new media versus traditional (old) media. One example, was their findings about how videos are utilized. The research discuss many features such as patterns of use, reference behaviors, and the properties of files of users.
The findings state that very little requests were made for videos, but the most downloads are transfer bytes from videos. Some advantages of this form of new media is that the videos are rated and they are categorized compared to old media. If a user goes to YouTube and want to find videos about learning in any category, they will get a range of videos with ratings. These ratings can help a user determine if they would like to either view the video and determine if the video would be helpful. Also, when a user is looking for a video, there are other videos of that topic made available.
The user can then pick and choose from those videos to watch and determine which one or ones fit their needs. New media files can be downloaded instantly and watched immediately after downloading it; old media needs a FLV (flash video) file to downloaded before the video can be viewed. The speed in which a user can watch a video with new media is much more improved than with old media which needs more time to upload the FLV file (file format) before a video can be downloaded and watched. New media presents a greater form of using the internet; with the advancement of technology daily, new media will continue to outpace old media. Old media is the traditional and new media is the advancement of old media.

Creativity and New Media
New media helps people from all walks of life; my new media project explains how anyone can learn how to crochet. My YouTube video shows you how to crochet the single stitch, one of the stitches used by crocheters to create many projects from hats, scarves, blankets (for babies and adults), and other projects for all occasions.
My video is to show how anyone can create great items for people of all ages. My most rewarding thing about crochet is when I make things for charity. I crochet hats and baby blankets for charities for children and adults battling cancer. When I receive notifications that they gave one of my crocheted garments to someone and they were very happy and appreciative of the gift, that brings me great joy. I hope that my video is able to teach anyone watching it. My video is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCAkD2f3V8U.

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds
What are different ways these virtual worlds can be used?
One way to use virtual worlds is in hospitals, schools, entertainment, and other organizations. The article, "Avatar II: The Hospital," it describes how a hospital simulation is built and used by hospital staff for patients. Disaster simulations for the hospital are created to test the responses of the staff and their efficiency to the disasters created. This helps hospital staff stay alert for any future occurrences and prepare them for stress management in these situations.
In "After Second Life, Can Virtual Worlds get a reboot?"helps children express themselves and use their imagination when interact and communicate with others. This creates a comfort zone for them and help them interact with other people more easily than face-to-face interaction. This can help ease the shyness these children may have regarding face-to-face interactions. This article describes how virtuality can be a great asset to various businesses and help people that feel isolated feel connected to someone in the comfort of their own surroundings - be it at home, at a cafe, at school, or even at a mall.
In "No Budget, No Boundaries: It's the Real You," this virtual world allows people to be and themselves by acting out in their alter ego. This virtual world allows people to create the person they would like to be but can't in the real world. They get to live out their inner true lifestyle through the Avatar. For example, a woman who works as a Nurse in real life does not buy the things her Avatar bought and live the lifestyle of the Avatar because it is not practical. Reality keeps us grounded to what we truly need to focus on and what we need to do to live; the Avatar allows us to get away from all the harshness of reality and escape into the lifestyle we would love to live.
In iReport: 'Naughty Auties' Battle Autism with Virtual Interaction," this is an example of how people can help people with the same or similar condition. This article describes how a man living in London, England created a virtual world for people with autism. This virtual world helps them communicate and interact with others without feeling isolated, ashamed, or embarrassed about who they are with their condition. The communicate in the comfort and ease of their own surroundings.
What are the pros and cons? Be specific.
The pros are that people can converse with each other comfortably and conveniently through Avatars. We can live out out inhibitions and be comfortable living it out. Also, virtual worlds can help improve our sense of awareness and alertness through simulations set up by our peers or administrators.
The cons are that it can take people more into isolation and not prepare them for real world interaction with others as required. It can create very unrealistic situations that may cause complex, challenging resolutions for people. A balance of virtual world and reality is needed to help people with shyness and other conditions that limits their abilities to communicate and interact with other people.
How do virtual worlds foster creativity?
Virtual worlds create many different simulations designed to enhance and benefit the organization's specific needs. While doing this, the organization can enjoy the benefits of convenience and learning for staff and customers alike. A couple of benefits are raising awareness and alertness for staff, comfort of communicating with others freely, and convenience of their environment or setting while communicating or interacting with others. Companies can create many scenarios to help employees and customers feel good about the use of virtual worlds. For example, in the article, "In Room 100, It's Sid and Nancy All Over Again," Michael Brown recreated Hotel Chelsea that was beloved by many in the real and now the virtual world. People now have the chance to revisit the hotel without feeling like they lost a favorite or landmark.
What do you think the future of virtual worlds will look like?
The future of virtual worlds can become endless with imaginative ideas that help others in a variety of ways. Recreating famous places and buildings, recreating simulated emergency situations for employees to stay alert and creating virtual worlds for people with disabilities is just a few ideas that the virtual world can continue to build upon. They can continue to build greater more futuristic creations in the future such as bridges, cities, and vacation spots for people to visit without having to pay the price. The future for virtual worlds is endless.

How does a Twitter discussion compare to a BlackBoard Discussion? To an in-class discussion?
Twitter uses a limited character, to-the-point tweets that convey messages to other users. These messages can enlighten, inform, and interest other tweeters. Twitter studies the way people use social media, how they tweet, how they respond, and monitor how the content is posted by users on this social media; this is to maintain a certain level of integrity for all who tweet. While Blackboard is used in academia that allows students and faculty to converse with each other, Twitter allows users either in a group or individually to correspond to posts of various interests, and concerns.
Blackboard usually have discussions and conversions with their Professor regarding mainly the class subject and topics relating the class. Like Twitter, you may or may not get immediate or any response to your posts from others. When messages are sent, they may not be completely understood; the sender will have to wait for a response or responses to from receivers of the message find out that the message was not understood. Then the sender will have to react to the receivers of the message.

In-class discussions can give students immediate feedback in for form of answers to questions and concerns they have concerning either the course or of other concerns that may effect them in daily life. Topics of interest can be discussed at the time class is in session and can get direct feedback. With Twitter, you may or you may not get immediate feedback. Like Twitter the wording in messages may not convey the accuracy of the message the sender is trying to convey to others. In-class discussions and conversations can give you immediate feedback if the message is not completely understood and can be rephrased to help students understand the nature and purpose of the statement and or question being asked.
Twitter and Blackboard can give users the convenience of the internet to send and receive messages to converse with others at various times of the day, and in-class discussions can give immediate responses only during class time. If you have any questions or concerns after class, students will have to either wait until the next class or email the Professor for a possible earlier response.
Social Networking Sites
Social Networking Sites
Compare your impressions of 4 sites.
Facebook, Twitter, Wiki, Blogs
Facebook is a social network that connects people with each other and groups display and connect interested people. I was able to connect to people that I went to High School with and has since moved on with their lives. It is a great thing to be able to search for people and connect with them after years of not seeing each other. I was able to go to functions that they invited me to and enjoy. With that said, Facebook is now facing many dilemmas due to data security breaches; the safety of people's personal data is of the utmost importance. The fact that our personal data that may contain our interests and preferences is sold to unknown people or companies is very worrisome.
On the other hand, Twitter is a more diligent social network that monitors its users much closer than Facebook. They have a limit on the amount a user can post at one time; so the user must be precise when posting. Their studies show them what users do and their patterns of usage on the website. Twitter monitors it users for potentially dangerous content that can offend or hurt others. Twitter uses their abilities to keep hazardous and/or dangerous posts to a minimum on their website to protect all users and keep a high-standard and quality of social media.
Wiki's are a social media that allows users to state many messages with a lot more room to express their feelings, state their findings based on research, and post topics and information that may be of interest to others that use this media. One unique feature of wiki's are that users can work collaboratively on one project either for research, work, or school. The users can add text and other material, edit material, and delete material that may not be of use to the project. It gives users more flexibility when using this social media. It helps users bring together all people and material in a faster, more convenient way.
Blogs are a social media that allows users to post information that can either inform or interest other users on the website. Blogs connect users to their interests and research posted, and allows them to respond regarding these posts. Blogs serve to help people reach out and respond to the interests and topics that concern them the most.

Social Networking
Social Networking
What are some ways
(corporate and otherwise) that these technologies can be used?
Video chatting and other mediums such as Facebook, Linkedin, and Instagram, companies can benefit from the instant access they can get through mass communication social networking brings. Many companies can reach many possible and loyal consumers through their unique brand of marketing their products.
Social networking can bring sales right to their door without the challenge of bringing consumers into their storefront establishments. Social media can have their products advertised and marketed over the internet within a matter of seconds, and consumers have access to these products in a matter of seconds after companies publish them online.
What are the benefits of these technologies to society? Be specific.
a. Convenience - the quickest way to advertise and publish products to a mass of consumers is through the internet. Social networking can help facilitate the way companies do business in a friendly, warm manner. Consumers can build relationships with the businesses they buy products from online through fast, reliable service and a great product.
When the products businesses sell are consistently of high-standard quality, consumers will purchase from these businesses time after time and become possibly loyal to the business for which they established this relationship. In the age of technology and information, the convenience of quick, fast access to what consumers need and want is a great way to become a great communicator today and in the future.
b. Efficient - the most consistent way to deliver great service at a low cost to consumers is another way to create great relationships with the business and the product. With constant interaction with consumers, businesses can get a feel of how the market with them are evolving and changing through time. By using social media, companies can use many different types of surveys to get current reactions to the current ways businesses are communicating with consumers and how to improve their connections to consumers in the future.
c. Effective - when businesses use strategies that help them create more effective ways to reach consumers and establish relationships with them that can build a community of productive results. Businesses that connect with these consumers can create an environment helps both consumers and businesses have better ways to establish a relationship that can last a long time.
Is there a "dark side"?
With all the great things that today's technology can bring, there are also challenging things that technology can bring. Accidents happen, and when businesses do not communicate in a manner that would help consumers feel confident that they are listening and truly care about what happens then many scenarios can play out. In "Amazon Says Error Removed Listings" by Motoko Rich, many gay and lesbian consumers were upset and concerned about the way the situation was handled. Amazon can learn from this and plan an appropriate way to respond to consumer concerns by using more efficient, effective methods that would be respectful to all.
In 'Dictionary word of the year: "Unfriend" by Doug Gross, he explains how face-to-face relationships can become dangerously lacking when there is too much electronic communication throughout the life of a young adult. He explains how children from very young ages are introduced to electronic devices, social media and how to use them in a very extensive manner causes less intimidate face-to-face time.
This can cause very awkward times when these same children need to meet people and establish relationships with others either at work or personal (such as finding a mate and have a family in the future) can be very challenging. I think the best way to cure this is to establish a balanced approach to social networking. Have limited times for which they can communicate online and then go and have social time as well.
